What is Fire Safety Engineering?

Fire Safety Engineers design systems and structures that lie dormant within our built environment, waiting for an extreme event. The knowledge, technology and engineering that contribute to fire safety are fundamental to escaping occupants, the fire and rescue service, and the protection of property.

The building industry is constantly innovating in pursuit of environmental, economic and construction efficiency. It is the role of the fire safety engineer to understand, anticipate and react to these innovations to ensure that disaster is avoided.

To meet this challenge, fire safety engineers need to be equipped with fundamental knowledge of and experience with fire phenomena, and an understanding of how people, structures, and fire safety systems respond to fire. Fire engineers must be able to combine these diverse fields of knowledge to create infrastructure that is inherently safe, while meeting the needs of clients, architects and fire authorities.

A degree in Fire Safety Engineering from Edinburgh University will enable you to develop all the knowledge you need to work in this field.

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of fire behaviour. Taught through lectures and hands-on labs in honours years.
  • Understanding of material behaviour, including response to fire. Taught through lectures and labs across all years.
  • Understanding of structural behaviour, including response to fire. Taught through lectures and projects across all years.
  • Experience of experimental fire testing. Taught through hands-on labs and research project in honours years.
  • Experience of computer fire models. Taught through lectures, assignments and research project in honours years.
  • Experience of design projects. Individual and group projects across all years of your degree.

What is the meaning of fire safety engineering?

Fire engineering is the application of engineering and scientific principles, to understand the phenomena and effects of fire as well as human behaviour in fire in order to meet the objectives of the applicable codes and standards,

Fire and Safety Engineering basically teaches students ways and measures to protect people, property, and the environment from fire. The stream is also known as Safety Engineering which is the practice of applying chemistry, physics, and engineering principles from mechanical, electrical, fire safety, and civil engineering to control the harmful and destructive effects of fire and smoke. Fire Engineering courses include topics such as fire detection, suppression and mitigation, and maintaining a tenable environment for evacuation during a fire. To pursue Fire and Safety Engineering courses, eligibility criteria vary depending on the level of education. For diploma programs, a minimum qualification of class 10 with Science and Mathematics is usually required, while undergraduate ( BTech ) programs typically mandate 10+2 with Science and Mathematics, often including Physics and Chemistry. Entrance exams like JEE Main or state-level engineering entrance exams may be necessary. For postgraduate ( MTech ) programs, a Bachelor's degree in Fire and Safety Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related fields is required, along with entrance exams such as GATE or institute-specific exams.

What is Fire Safety Engineering Course?

Engineering that focuses on preventing and reducing fire risks is called "Fire Safety Engineering." It includes the design and installation of fire-safety equipment as well as the study of fire dynamics and the flammability of materials. To evaluate the hazards of fire in buildings and other structures, fire safety engineers apply their understanding of fire science and engineering principles. They then develop and put into action fire safety precautions to lessen the risk of a fire developing and to lessen the damage if one does.

Why pursue Fire Safety Engineering course?

Engineers that specialize in fire safety are essential to guaranteeing the security of our built environment. They create and put into action fire safety precautions that can lessen damage from a fire's effects and safeguard people from harm or death. Engineers that specialize in fire safety can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals and entire communities. Fire safety engineers can protect lives and property by assisting in fire prevention and fire damage reduction.

Who can pursue Fire Safety Engineering course?

Since Fire Safety Engineering is a technical field, having a solid background in math and physics is crucial. You will be better able to comprehend the fundamentals of fire science and engineering as a result. The ability to recognize and address fire safety-related issues is a requirement for fire safety engineers. To do this, you must be able to critically and creatively think.

What is the scope in future for Fire Technology and Safety Engineering?

Fire technology and safety engineering is a field that is focused on preventing, controlling, and mitigating the impact of fires and other emergencies. The scope for this field in the future is quite promising, as there is a growing emphasis on safety and risk management in various industries and public spaces. With increasing urbanization and industrialization, the demand for professionals with expertise in fire technology and safety engineering is likely to rise. Additionally, as technology continues to advance, there will be opportunities for the integration of new innovations, such as smart fire detection systems and advanced firefighting equipment. Overall, the future for fire technology and safety engineering looks promising in terms of career opportunities and the potential to make a meaningful impact on public safety.

Occupational Health and safety is still in the emerging phase in India. But it has vast scope in future. As various events occurred in the last few years and especially during the pandemic.

Several incidences of Hospital fire, fire in factories, fire in cracker factories, incidences where manual scavengers died while cleaning sewers, Natural disasters such as flash floods, earthquakes, etc., Several, work at height incidents in building, marine incidents involving capsize and man overboard.

A culpable homicide case has been lodged against the factory owner for 18 deaths in the Pune chemical factory fire incident.

Above few example of lack of fire and safety management in various spaces.

As we are still in the premature stage to plan health and safety in industries and even in government.

The government first time brought one Occupational health and safety code at the central level. There is a lack of awareness and knowledge about the health and safety management system and how safety management works.

Health and safety to be managed at different angles, from research and development, governmental interference, Management of industries, technical angle, organizational angle, and so on.

So it is imperative that Management of Fire and safety has a big scope in near future.

What is the future scope after doing a B.Sc. in fire engineering from NCFSE?

As the quality supply of fire engineers and officers in India is very low and demand of these fire officers is increasing day by day in almost every companies where fire and safety is prime concern amongst the employees of these companies, so at present the stream of this fire engineering is very promising for your career especially from NFSC Nagpur college.

As this college is the only government college in India which runs this B.E. Fire engineering under affiliation of RTM Nagpur university as per AICTE norms. And also it admits only 60 students so you can imagine that if you get this college you will be the fire officer graduated from the number 1 fire engineering college in India. Also you will get very much priority in off campus placements if you will do this degree from this college and write in the resume.

Now coming back to your question there is very nice scope after doing fire engineering especially from NFSC Nagpur as many reputed PSU(like ONGC, IOCL,GAIL,SAIL, BCPL) , government companies(state fire services, various airports), top private companies (L&T,Reliance) and many more companies comes every year for placements for these 60 students and many companies also has off campus placements so in future you can also apply for them also.

So at last fire engineering has very nice scope as supply of fire engineers is very low and demand is high. This can be very true especially for coming 5 years.

What are the career opportunities of Fire Safety Engineering?

Career opportunities are very dynamic with today trends. You can got job offer from PSU of oil gas petrochemical fertilizer & chemical industry and if you will do post or advanced diploma in industrial safety so this is extra advantage for your career.

The field of fire detection has advanced to where smoke detectors and alarm devices have combined to become life- safety systems. The purpose of an automatic fire-alarm system is to detect an occurrence, alert the control panel and proper authorities, and notify the occupants to take action.
